Vietnam’s ESG Ambition Faces a Data Gap

Rising Demand for ESG Transparency

As sustainability becomes a key investment criterion worldwide, Vietnam is under increasing pressure to improve the quality and accessibility of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information. Investors, regulators, and international partners are demanding more transparent and standardized disclosures from businesses across the country.

Fragmented Data Remains a Major Obstacle

Despite growing awareness of ESG principles, reporting practices remain inconsistent. Many organizations, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), struggle with fragmented data systems, limited expertise, and a lack of unified reporting standards. These challenges make it difficult for stakeholders to assess and compare corporate sustainability performance.

Proposal for a National ESG Portal

To address these shortcomings, the presentation proposes the establishment of a centralized ESG portal. The platform would serve as a national repository for ESG information, enabling businesses to submit data through standardized frameworks while allowing investors, regulators, researchers, and financial institutions to access reliable sustainability metrics.

Global Standards at the Core

A central theme of the proposal is alignment with internationally recognized reporting frameworks. By adopting global standards, Vietnamese companies would be better positioned to benchmark their performance, improve credibility, and enhance access to international markets and capital.

Technology as a Key Enabler

Digital technologies are highlighted as critical to the initiative’s success. Automated reporting processes, data validation systems, and advanced analytics could improve accuracy, reduce reporting burdens, and transform ESG data into a strategic resource for decision-making.

Supporting SMEs Through the Transition

The presentation emphasizes that SMEs will require targeted support to participate effectively in the ESG ecosystem. Simplified reporting tools, capacity-building programs, and technical guidance are seen as essential to ensuring broad adoption across the economy.

Unlocking Sustainable Finance Opportunities

A stronger ESG reporting infrastructure could help Vietnam attract sustainable investment and expand access to green and sustainability-linked financing. Reliable ESG data is increasingly viewed as a prerequisite for participation in global capital markets.

Collaboration Will Determine Success

The proposed portal would require cooperation among government agencies, financial regulators, academic institutions, industry associations, development partners, and the private sector. Such collaboration is considered vital for establishing a trusted and effective ESG ecosystem.
